What is Discipleship?

I have believed in my heart and confessed with my mouth that Christ is Lord and Saviour. I can now say with confidence that He is my Lord. Now what?

Salvation is the Ultimate Expression of God's Love toward Us

Man's Disconnect

Let’s start with our INITIAL condition when we are born iinto this fallen and sinful world   When sin came into the world,  beause of  Adam’s and Eve”s disobedience, our  spirit was separated  from God’s Spirit.   That was the true death!

We are born with this sin nature,  Everyone has sinned,

Romans 3:23 tells us “Since we’ve compiled this long and sorry record as sinners (both us and them) and proved that we are utterly incapable of living the glorious lives God wills for us.

Colossians 2:13 puts it this way –

When you were stuck in your old sin-dead life, you were incapable of responding to God.

But God in His grace,  sacrificed His Son for me and you so we can have eternal life and a relationship with Him!

John 3: 16

This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: This so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because of that person’s failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him.

Ephesians 2:1-10

It wasn’t so long ago that you were mired in that old stagnant life of sin.
2 You let the world, which doesn’t know the first thing about living, tell you how to live. You filled your lungs with polluted unbelief, and then exhaled disobedience.
3 We all did it, all of us doing what we felt like doing, when we felt like doing it, all of us in the same boat. It’s a wonder God didn’t lose his temper and do away with the whole lot of us.
4 Instead, immense in mercy and with an incredible love,
5 he embraced us. He took our sin-dead lives and made us alive in Christ. He did all this on his own, with no help from us!
6 Then he picked us up and set us down in highest heaven in company with Jesus, our Messiah.
7 Now God has us where he wants us, with all the time in this world and the next to shower grace and kindness upon us in Christ Jesus.
8 Saving is all his idea, and all his work. All we do is trust him enough to let him do it. It’s God’s gift from start to finish!
9 We don’t play the major role. If we did, we’d probably go around bragging that we’d done the whole thing!
10 No, we neither make nor save ourselves. God does both the making and saving. He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing.

The Cross of Christ

When Jesus died on the cross, His last declaration was that “It is finished.”  It completely satisfied God’s requirement for the penalty and payment of my sin.  Look how it is expressed in Colossians 2:13-17

When you were stuck in your old sin-dead life, you were incapable of responding to God. God brought you alive – right along with Christ! Think of it! All sins forgiven,
14 the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant canceled and nailed to Christ’s Cross.
15 He stripped all the spiritual tyrants in the universe of their sham authority at the Cross and marched them naked through the streets.
16 So don’t put up with anyone pressuring you in details of diet, worship services, or holy days.
17 All those things are mere shadows cast before what was to come; the substance is Christ.

Whosoever believes...

All things start with Jesus!  There is nothing that we can do to save ourselves.

Ephesians 2 says that, we neither make nor save ourselves. God does both the making and saving. He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing.work we had better be doing.

Our responsibility is to make the choice  to believe what He  did for us on the Cross and to rest in the power of His resurrection.   Jesus is the Author and Finisher of our faith,  John 14:6 reminds us that “Jesus said, “I am the Road, also the Truth, also the Life. No one gets to the Father apart from me.  The answer to being saved is very clear.  Look at the clarity that He expresses in the scripturea below.

Romans 5:5-10

Christ arrives right on time to make this happen. He didn’t, and doesn’t, wait for us to get ready. He presented himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ourselves ready. And even if we hadn’t been so weak, we wouldn’t have known what to do anyway.

7 We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for, and we can understand how someone good and noble could inspire us to selfless sacrifice.

8 But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him.

9Now that we are set right with God by means of this sacrificial death, the consummate blood sacrifice, there is no longer a question of being at odds with God in any way.

10 If, when we were at our worst, we were put on friendly terms with God by the sacrificial death of his Son, now that we’re at our best, just think of how our lives will expand and deepen by means of his resurrection life!

Our response is a  matter of humbling ourselves and believing in our heart and confessing with our mouth that He is Lord.

Sanctification is Expression of Our Love towards God

What is Sanctification

It is the term used in the New Covenant which  is HAGIOSMOS.  It means basically ‘set apart’, in the sense of being set apart from all else and dedicated for Yahweh God’s use. … This work of grace at salvation sets the believer apart as separate from and holy unto Yahweh God.

Remember Romana 5:10 tells us that now that we’re at our best, just think of how our lives will expand and deepen by means of his resurrection life!     We are not working by our own might, power or strength  We are who we are based on who He is and His finished work.    We are resting in His finished work!

Jesus said in John 14:15  that if we love Him, we would obey Him

If you love me, keep my commands.

Our First Gift from our Heavenly Father is the Holy Spirit

Every Christian receives the gift of His Holy Spirit when they accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior..  Remember what Jesus told the disciples in John 14::16

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—
17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.
20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.
21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

Every Christian has his or her day of Pentecost where the Holy spirit will empower you,  Do you remember the day of Pentecost for the ‘disciples in Acts 3?.<

Salvation and Sanctification Made Clear

God’s Way

Romans 3:21-26 (The Message Translation)

But in our time something new has been added. What Moses and the prophets witnessed to all those years has happened.
22 The God-setting-things-right that we read about has become Jesus-setting-things-right for us. And not only for us, but for everyone who believes in him. For there is no difference between us and them in this.
23 Since we’ve compiled this long and sorry record as sinners (both us and them) and proved that we are utterly incapable of living the glorious lives God wills for us,
24 God did it for us. Out of sheer generosity he put us in right standing with himself. A pure gift. He got us out of the mess we’re in and restored us to where he always wanted us to be. And he did it by means of Jesus Christ.
25 God sacrificed Jesus on the altar of the world to clear that world of sin. Having faith in him sets us in the clear. God decided on this course of action in full view of the public – to set the world in the clear with himself through the sacrifice of Jesus, finally taking care of the sins he had so patiently endured.
26 This is not only clear, but it’s now – this is current history! God sets things right. He also makes it possible for us to live in his rightness.

God’s Way

Ezekiel 36:24-27 (The Message Translation)

‘For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land.
25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols.
26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.

The World’s Way

Isaiah 64

All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

 The World’s Way

Galatians 2:18-23

I kept working my head off to please God, and it didn’t work. So I quit being a “law man” so that I could be God’s man. Christ’s life showed me how, and enabled me to do it. I identified myself completely with him. Indeed, I have been crucified with Christ. My ego is no longer central. It is no longer important that I appear righteous before you or have your good opinion, and I am no longer driven to impress God. Christ lives in me. The life you see me living is not “mine,” but it is lived by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I am not going to go back on that.

Our Choice Commentary BY Theresa Morgan

We can humble ourselves and accept Jesus as our sacrifice.  OR we can just work out our own situation in our strength.

If we take the world’s way, our sins will not be paid for and we will spend eternity in Hell away from God.

Have you done it God’s way by accepting Jesus as your  Lord and Savior?

New Creation Commentary BY Theresa Morgan

Can you identify with the scriptures re: God’s Way or the World’s Way?  Have you been trying to please God through your works but are failing after trying so many times?

After a long time, I realized that I was trying to get my old self, from the first Adam to follow God.   That is impossible to accomplish.  Think about what we are trying to do – take the old sinful nature and control it so it can follow God.  Our old nature will never be converted to be sons and daughters of the Lord.  Our old nature has only one end which is to be crucified with Christ.  As the old nature is crucified, we are given a new heart and a new spirit (Ezekiel 36:26)

God’s salvation gives us the power and opportunity to love others.  We would typically think that this “freedom by grace ” is designed for us so we can indulge the desires of our flesh.  We typically want what we want when we want it.

BUT Accepting Christ by faith gives us the power over our flesh. We must know that “I have been crucified with Christ.     Walking in this truth, Colossians 2:9-10 reminds us “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.
